Chiropractic is an independent field within the health sciences that focuses on the identification, treatment, and prevention of functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system, as well as their effects on the nervous system and overall health.

Its core methods are manual examination and treatment techniques. A key element is the chiropractic adjustment – a specific, precisely applied impulse to the spine or extremities aimed at improving mobility, function, and neuromuscular balance.

The chiropractic treatment consists of

Examination

Orthopedic and neurological tests, analysis of diagnostic imaging (e.g. x-ray, MRI, CT), specific chiropractic examinations aiming at biomechanical and neurological function and integrity.

Treatment

Manual therapeutic interventions (e.g. manipulation and mobilization of joints, muscle and soft tissue release techniques), exercise programs, supporting therapies (e.g. physical therapy, bandages, nutritional advice) and advice on related topics (e.g. spinal health, posture, life-style modifications).

Elite sports demand maximum performance and discipline. Sports chiropractic can help athletes to achieve optimal physical conditions for peak performance. Its main focus lies in performance enhancement and injury management – maintaining or restoring biomechanical function, neurological integrity, and muscular balance. The International Certificate of Sport Chiropractic (ICSC) specifically qualifies chiropractors for work in elite sports. Consequently, many athletes seek chiropractic care before and during competitions to optimize their performance and rehabilitation.

Continuing education opportunities

A primary objective of FICS is to promote equal standards of education and practice in sports chiropractic worldwide.

The International Chiropractic Sports Science Diploma (ICSSD) produces a well rounded individual chiropractor who is qualified to work at sporting events throughout the world. Furthermore, it is the minimum qualification required to be part of a FICS chiropractic delegation for a national or international event such as the Olympic and World Games.
